Scrapbook page 55

Another illustration for Book of Pages that never made it into the final story (drawn sometime around 1991). This one is “A Serious Gambler”, in which the gambler points out to Jiriki that the screens in the casino, like those in the rest of the Metropolis, are careful to show that there really is always someone doing better than you, thereby undermining any doubts you may have about participating. Although this page didn’t make it, the preceding page (page 13, “Making a Lifeless Living”, which is about money) survives, and you can see Jiriki walking into the sleazy money district (“Coinage!”, “Cash Show!”, “Peep at Milled Edges") where this casino scene logically belongs.
